Critic Michael Althen knew how to motivate a passionate dialogue about cinema with his writing. He was drawn to the subject matter because of the contrasts it draws upon -- art and fairground, documentary and fantasy as well as everyday life and ecstasy. We hear from colleagues, friends, directors, his wife, and even Althen himself, and it is as if film history suddenly begins unfolding in front of the viewers' eyes.
